paradigms and belief systems The following is an article by Robert Anton Wilson, author of the trilogy of the Illuminati (and other interesting things)

Towards a general theory of belief systems
Robert Anton Wilson
My thesis University Paideia, in 1980, had the title of the stentorian neuro-sociological evolution of circuits: a contribution to the sociobiology of consciousness (which really does have a stench academic, is not it, for God's sake?).
The main theme of the dissertation, like most of my books, was to try to understand how something as complex as human society would emerge ordered by a pack of primates, mammals that were only marginally more intelligent than wolves or rats.
My thesis argued that the language and hypnosis form the foundation on which humans create worlds of consciousness and imagination that no other animal seems to be able to achieve. That is to say that the language wherever it appeared, it allowed people to do what no other animal seems to be doing, that is, display and / or
"contemplate" verbally in front of something that is not present to the senses. (I think that language is the equivalent of an evolutionary quantum leap, a leap probably due to the encounter between the hominids and the psychedelic plants, of course, not expressed in this thesis, I am an idiot, but not a perfect
idiot!). This fantasy
cogitation or reflection, or we can then to compare what we imagine with what we experience.
animals suffer just the physical pain, the human suffering is physical pain is an added psychological pain, caused by the thought (as a verbal construct)
"I should not tolerate this."
This leads us to struggle for social progress, for better medicine, etc., but also encourages us to feel the bitter sense of "injustice" or "offended" when there is nothing concrete that we can do to alleviate pain.
In short, without language have less pain and no progress.
Let us also imagine that what is contains a lot of things is a desirable lots of scary things, what we want and what we fear.
Therefore, unlike our cousins \u200b\u200bchimpanzees and baboons, as they can be disabled, only humans can yearn for things that never existed outside of "language games" (ie, their thoughts).
Humans are very angry with the world for not being very good as are their fantasies.
can also scare themselves to death, or frightened with each other with verbal constructs that have never appeared in the experience significant.
Now: the status of "living in fantasy," or "being in a head trip" is by no means rare and is not typical only of the well-fed intellectuals tenured.
All are prey to such a state, a rather alarming levels.
Humans never have to do with the raw and naked experience as the other animals.
They have to do with the experience filtered through what Timothy Leary called a "tunnel of reality" and the sociologists call it grid or glossary - a belief system.
Every belief system (or SC) colors the experience differently, pink-red or dark black or some unique personal taste.
We can see how someone else makes the SC sometimes that someone blind and "stupid." But we find very hard to see how our SC does the same with us. Here's what
that anthropologists call acculturation.
With Gurdjieff, I prefer to call it hypnosis.
All cultures of the world, from African bushmen Stone Age to medieval peasants still in County Kerry Ireland, artistic crowd from Paris to the agnostic, Oxford, Ohio Republican-Iranian Islamic fundamentalists, the fanatics of science fiction to neo-paganism and "witches" by the Tibetan Buddhists 'Committee for Scientific Proof of Claims of the Paranormal', each of them is another case of hypnosis group by a belief system.
Here, then, that when I was sent to "school" to be "educated", that meant I had to be hypnotized into the "tunnel reality "of my tribe.
E 'extraordinarily easy to induce hypnosis in primates at least partially domesticated.
Every politician knows how to induce hypnosis, and just damn few people on the planet know how to de-hypnotize themselves.
The world does not is governed by fattti or logic. E 'ruled by belief systems.
If you put together in one room a group made up of Irish Catholics, German bankers, French intellectuals, Hindu priests, Republicans of Orange County (Los Angeles), Russian bureaucrats , nudists, Buddhists and followers of scientology, none will be able to understand any of the others, except in those cases in which a very vague and distorted. Their SC entangled in the system ear-brain-eye and distort all the perceptions.
IMPORTANT! READ!
What I'm saying can be expressed in two simple commandments:
(1) Never believe totally in someone else's SC;
(2) Never believe totally in their SC.
These formulations are mine, but the basic idea here, of course, comes from Gautama Buddha.
If you do not keep a certain "zeteticismo" (an ancient greek word, revived by Dr. Marcello Truzzi, which means skeptical of the dogmas) to all ideas, however attractive they are, you came in hypnosis, as I entered when I was sent to a Catholic school to be educated by the nuns - a bunch of ignorant women who had been hypnotized so deeply as to remain mentally maimed for life.
In a famous story, asked the Buddha:
"Are you God?"
"No," he responds.
"You're a saint?"
"No".
"So what are you?"
"I am awake."
meant he was able to see who he was, where he was and what was happening around him, no longer blinded by belief systems.
